Third Annual Outing with the Rockies July 1

Colorado Rockies Owner Charlie Monfort BS’82 hosted more than 280 U Denver Alumni Chapter members and friends at Coors Field on July 1.

Guests enjoyed a picnic of fried chicken, burgers, brats, and hot dogs in a private picnic area overlooking center field. Monfort addressed the group, recalling his time at the U as a student and providing an update on the ups and downs of the Rockies, last year’s National League champs.

The U’s Vice President for Institutional Advancement, Fred Esplin BS’74, also spoke briefly to the crowd, bringing alumni up to date on the wide variety of activities taking place at the U—and announcing a $1 million gift from Monfort to the Athletics Dept., which will go toward funding completion of the renovation of the weight room as well as naming the Monfort Family Hall of Champions located at the entrance to the Spence Eccles Field House.

To top off the evening, guests watched as the Rockies outbatted and outran the San Diego Padres, 4-0, and enjoyed a shutout game by pitching ace Aaron Cook.

“The event at Coors Field was an outstanding chance to get to know fellow Utah alumni while having a great time at a Rockies game,” said Chapter President Rob Hill BS’91. “We were thrilled to have Charlie host us again. I hope to have more alumni join us for future events and get involved with the chapter.”
