Career Corner: Job Club Razz·ma·tazz |
|
Job Club, through Alumni Career Services, continues to line up some great speakers and presenters. Too bad you have to work!! You might want to rethink your Friday options and consider playing hookey in order to spend time with us. How can you afford to miss speakers that tell it like it is—about the workplace, job searching, career re-invention, and critical things such as personal marketing, branding, unique selling propositions, and how to create a profit-proposal generator? Might you be missing vital pieces of knowledge and information by remaining at work? Larry gave me an advance copy of his new book, Indispensable By Monday. It will be released in early February 2010 by Wiley Publishing. To gather information for this book, former VitalSmarts owner Myler asked 1,800 corporate leaders to identify the bottom-line behaviors that would make employees essential to their organizations. Indispensable By Monday outlines the profit-producing behaviors that distinguish workers who add value to a business from those who don’t, in reducing company costs, increasing income, improving key processes, bringing back lost customers, and more. Myler showed the audience how to use a tool that he developed, the Profit Proposal Generator™. It is free on his Web site and, in today’s parlance, is very cool. Visit www.moreorlessinc.com and click on “tools,” where you will be walked through the calculations that can make your résumé sizzle. Troy Tate, a former U of U graduate, resides in California but recently gave a workshop for alumni at the University of Utah—The Missing Step. Troy was a trial lawyer for more than 15 years but felt that his career choice was no longer a good fit for him. His passion now is helping individuals connect to a deeper level within themselves in order to discover their “DNA” (drives, needs, aptitudes). According to Tate, a new kind of workplace engagement happens when one identifies and pursues one’s true niche in the marketplace. The Missing Step workshop was a beta test, providing an interactive learning opportunity for the 29 individuals who attended. The bottom line to all of this? Life is too short to miss Job Club, a weekly support group for those who either want to find a job or change careers. Job Club meets each Friday in the Student Services Building, Room 380, from 2 to 4 pm. Even better—It’s free! Join our group on LinkedIn called Job Club. It is a sub-group of the University of Utah Alumni Association. Need more information?
