Career Corner: A New Mentor Program at the U — We Invite You to Join!

University of Utah Career Services is implementing a mentor program for U of U Alumni and employers. The mentor program offers another resource for U students looking to discover more about their career options. In addition, it’s an exciting way for current students to get to know and network with alumni, and for both parties to foster a learning environment within the workplace.

After signing up, mentors may choose the maximum number of students allowed to contact them, as well as the nature, mode and frequency of the communications. The mentor program does not require a major time commitment; rather, registering is merely an expression of willingness to speak with students and/or alumni in any way convenient to you—via e-mail, phone, etc.—about questions they may have regarding your field of work, or how you landed your position, made it up the career ladder, and so forth.

The insights of a working professional can be invaluable to jobseekers, and mentors often play a very important role in helping a student decide on a career. A mentor can impart what he/she knows about a certain industry, company, and/or opportunities within the field of interest in a way that no one else without that experience can.

It isn’t necessary that students and mentors live within the same geographical area in order to have a mentoring relationship. There are many modes of communication in today’s high-tech world. What is important is that a mentor is willing to share information with the mentoree on his/her professional journey.

Also, keep in mind that gender isn’t the most important factor in choosing a mentor. Rather, it’s the person’s knowledge, reputation, character, and willingness to share his/her professional experiences and expertise that count.

How to Register

To register as a mentor or for answers to frequently asked questions, visit Career Services’ main Web page at http://careers.utah.edu, scroll over “Employers,” and click on “Become a Mentor.” This takes you to a FAQ page regarding mentorship, as well as a link to registration (https://www.myinterfase.com/utah/mentor; click on “Click here to register” and it should just take a few minutes to fill out the form). If you need assistance in registering, please call University of Utah Career Services at (801) 581-6186.

Don’t miss this opportunity to use your own experiences to expand the career options of University of Utah students! What could be more satisfying?
