My Boss Thinks I’m Crazy
By Julie Swaner

One of the biggest marketing challenges to Alumni Career Services is convincing alumni that our tools offer superior job search advantages at a more-than-reasonable price (just look at the off-campus competition!). It’s a fact: We offer big dollar tools at a small dollar cost to our alumni.

But what does this have to do with my boss thinking I’m nuts? Because I want to offer CareerBeam—by far the best tool available for those looking for a job—to members of the University of Utah Alumni Association for mere pennies on the dollar. (In the end, my supervisor saw the light, even though this institutional tool doesn’t come cheap!) In this tough economic market, we feel it is important to help our alumni by offering one of the most comprehensive job search tools out there at a fraction of our actual cost.

So, here is our special offer:

If you are a current member of the University of Utah Alumni Association, you qualify for access to CareerBeam for six months for the exceedingly modest price of $25. (The current cost of CareerBeam for U of U graduates is $50 for six months.) Keep in mind that if you were to purchase the tool directly from CareerBeam, it would cost you $34.99 per month or more than $209 for six months!

If you are not a current member of the Alumni Association, but would like access to CareerBeam, the cost to you is $50, which gives you both access to CareerBeam for six months AND membership in the Alumni Association for one year. In other words, by joining the Alumni Association for $36, you gain access to CareerBeam for the low, low price of $15, and you get to enjoy all the benefits of membership in the Alumni Association.

Please note that this offer is only valid through the month of August 2009.

So, what is CareerBeam and how can it help you with your job search?  To put it simply, CareerBeam is the most effective tool out there when it comes to helping people find jobs. It features a “virtual career center” that provides industry research tools, international databases, lead-generation technology, assessments, professional résumé and cover letter builders, as well as search strategy resources to leverage local opportunities.

Here are just a few of the many features that CareerBeam offers:

  • Job Trigger technology that continually scans more than 20,000 business sources for more than 150 categories of “job trigger events,” which indicate an actual job posting or opportunity. More than 25,000 of these new job triggers are produced every day. Triggers that match your criteria are e-mailed to you as job leads.
  • Search Companies feature that includes over 17 million organizations, providing a company overview, key and business intelligence information. You’ll have access to 20 million industry contacts, many noting biographies and contact information, which is very useful for connecting with alumni.
  • Company Intelligence, including all Dun & Bradstreet information, allowing you to create specific Industry, Company, and Geography searches to amass target company lists. There is also a “research on demand” feature that allows you to request research on companies not currently in the database.
  • Track Companies & Manage Contacts feature that assists you in finding new positions in target companies; storing key contacts, notes, résumés, cover letters, and position descriptions; and scheduling follow-up calls and interviews.
  • Industry Research Database covering over 200 industries, which will save you valuable research time, enhance interview performance, and give you the competitive edge to more job offers.
  • International Database covering more than 70 countries where career opportunities are offered
  • Ten assessments/exercises that culminate in a personalized career report
  • Interactive seminar series with Professional Résumé and Cover Letter Builders
