Alumni Career Counselor Julie Swaner

Alumni Career Services is expanding and changing. After two-and-a-half years we are refining our program to meet the additional needs and demands of our alumni and other clients. Our goal is to be the organization you think of first when you have suffered job loss or job stagnation, or are in need of a career change. We offer career transition services delivered by experienced staff and consultants who have extensive backgrounds in personal consulting and business.

The most recent addition to the Career Services team is Susan Marks of Waldron and Co., formerly of OCM and American Express. Susan brings extensive knowledge and over 20 years of consulting experience in the career management and development field. Each month Susan will deliver a Job Search Workshop as part of our six-month Alumni Career Service package.

During this one-day workshop, participants learn how to develop and implement a successful job search plan, including building a résumé that stands out from the crowd, and polishing skills to interview successfully.

Each workshop includes:

Marketing Tools – Learn the fundamentals of résumé writing and the importance of highlighting accomplishments. By the end of the seminar, you will have developed a first draft of your résumé. This session also focuses on developing and polishing references, cover letters, applications, electronic résumés and portfolios.

Developing a Marketing Plan – By having your career and job goals examined, you are able to begin identifying target organizations and developing a marketing plan. Methods for researching companies are also discussed.

Networking/Getting Organized – 80 percent of all jobs are found through networking. Learn how to tap into this unpublished job market by identifying your network, preparing a network script and practicing methods for responding to difficult situations including handling voice mail, making a good first impression, staying organized and keeping the network alive and growing.

Interviewing – Develop skills to “market” your accomplishments, communicate effectively, respond to difficult questions, and gain information needed for the next step in the process. Different interview settings and formats are discussed and techniques for making positive presentations provided. Then, learn how to negotiate a compensation and benefit package, while maintaining a positive relationship with your potential employer.

We have bolstered our job-coaching program to include more options:
