The academic year officially concluded with Commencement on Friday, May 8. To celebrate the graduation of more than 7,000 students, the Alumni Association treated students to free hot dogs on the Union Plaza and also helped the Student Government debut Ubike, the 2009 Senior Class Gift, which will provide students, staff, faculty, and the community a no-cost bike rental program. Both stories are featured in this issue.
Also highlighted this month: The Utah Museum of Natural History is now showcasing the “Toadally Frogs!” exhibit while offering members of the Alumni Association discounts on individual admissions (for up to six) or annual memberships. Last but not least, members can reserve space in the May 22 Insider Tour—offered exclusively to members—featuring a visit to the recently renovated Marriott Library and presentations from Alumni Association Executive Director John Ashton, Eric Browning from Facilities Management, and Professor Chuck Wight from the Department of Chemistry. All this and more is featured in this issue of your member newsletter, @TheU. Enjoy!

| Alumni Association Partners with ASUU to Create Bike Loaner Program |
 |
Each year, the University of Utah Senior Class presents a gift to the University of Utah as a way of saying “thank you.” This year, the Alumni Association has collaborated with the U of U student government, ASUU, to create the Class of 2009 senior class gift, Ubike.
Ubike is a program that will make new and used red bicycles available for free checkout at the University Student Union, the hub of campus. Students, faculty, and staff will be able to "rent" a bicycle for personal use for up to two weeks, at no charge.
The Senior Class Gift Committee introduced the bike library program during the University of Utah’s Earth Fest on Wednesday, April 22, to commemorate Earth Day. Complete with a ribbon cutting and an official dedication by Senior Class President Madison Warren, the Ubike program was launched when 10 of the recently purchased bikes were ridden around campus.
Bicycles and donations are still needed to get Ubike fully up and rolling by summer. Gifts of all sizes are welcome. For just $400, supporters can have a bicycle “named” after themselves or a loved one. Ubike is also in need of donated bicycles in working condition, which will be fixed up and painted Ute red. For more information on Ubike, or to make a donation, visit www.alumni.utah.edu/ubike. |

| Scholarship Walkway Makes Higher Education Accessible |
 |
With the end of another academic year, and the rapid approach of Fall Semester, many University of Utah students find themselves looking for ways to pay tuition next fall. As tuition steadily increases for students each year, the University of Utah Alumni Association is dedicated to making college more affordable for students through our Scholarship Walkway program, and we invite members to participate in this important endeavor.
The walkway, leading up to the main entrance of the Alumni House, is constructed to feature “donor bricks” acknowledging supporters in a meaningful, attractive— and permanent—way.
For a one-time tax-deductible gift of $500 or $1,000, we’ll engrave your name or a name of a loved one into a brick and place it in the walkway as a permanent reminder of your generosity. The funds raised from the Scholarship Walkway will provide awards that directly benefit many deserving students. You can donate confidently, knowing that 100 percent of your gift will go directly to the University of Utah Alumni Association Scholarship Fund.
To make your donation online today, visit us at www.alumni.utah.edu. |

Late Motherhood May Signal Greater Longevity
Women who have babies naturally in their 40s or 50s tend to live longer than other women. Now, a new study shows their brothers also live longer but the brothers' wives do not, suggesting that the same genes prolong lifespan and female fertility and may be more important than social and environmental factors. For the complete story, visit the University’s News Room.
