2001 Board Members & Scholarship Recipients Announced!



Four new members have been appointed to the Alumni Association Board. Each carries an impressive list of accomplishments and has served the University and local communities with dedication and distinction.

Daryl Cameron Barrett BS’67 has been involved in child abuse prevention programs in numerous capacities, including as faculty associate in service learning with the College of Nursing. For many years she has worked in the field of health, education, and human services as an advocate and policy-maker. Most recently, she has become a Feng Shui consultant in environmental health, helping clients adjust to their surroundings to meet their personal and professional goals. She and her husband, Stephen L. Barrett BA’67 MBA’69, have three daughters.
Pamela T. Greenwood BS’66 JD’72, a former member of the Utah Symphony, is presiding judge of the Utah Court of Appeals, appointed in 1987. She was president of the Utah State Bar, for which she served as counsel for three years, and acting State Court Administrator. She received a Special Service award from the Utah State Bar in 1996. Greenwood was also honored as the Utah Woman Lawyer of the Year in 1993. She and her husband, Avid A. Greenwood BA’70, have two children.
Dennis V. Haslam BA’73 JD’76 has been president and CEO of the Larry H. Miller Sports and Entertainment Division since 1997 and was named president of the Utah Jazz in March 2000. In addition to serving as Bar Commissioner and sitting on numerous bar committees, Haslam taught at the U College of Law. He and his wife, Deborah, have three children.
J. Spencer Kinard BS’66 is assistant director of the State of Utah Division of Travel Development (Utah Travel Council). A 35-year veteran of broadcast journalism, Kinard was involved in the landmark coverage of man’s first landing on the moon and the Apollo 13 flight. For more than 18 years he was the voice of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir broadcast, “Music and the Spoken Word.” He also received the Clifford P. Cheney Service to Journalism Award. He and his wife, Lynette, have five children.

EMERITUS SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS

The Emeritus Scholarship is awarded each year to two nontraditional students who wish to return to school
to attain a degree. The 2001-02 recipients are:

Yvonne Budenberg, who is working toward a BA degree in German and English Carolyn Cannon Morgan, who is pursuing a degree in biomedical engineering while raising three children.

Six new members have been appointed to the Emeritus Board. They were selected for their continued interest and excellence in serving their communities in the 40 or more years since leaving the University,
and the Alumni Association is proud to welcome them as members.

George C. Pingree BS’59 MD’62, an eye physician and surgeon, completed his medical residency in ophthalmology at the Mayo Clinic. He has been president of the Utah Ophthalmological Society, secretary of the Utah Medical Association, ophthalmology consultant to the Emir of Bahrain, and LDS mission president in Nigeria. He and his wife, Anne Clark Pingree BS’63, have five children. Flora Cannon Weggeland BS’52 PhD’75 has been an educator in public schools and higher education for over 36 years, including serving as principal of Parkview Elementary in Salt Lake City. She has volunteered in community efforts such as Utah Children, Valley Mental Health Foundation, and FACT (State of Utah Families, Agencies, and Committees Together). She and her husband, G. Gail Weggeland BS’53 JD’55, have three children, all U alumni.
Lennox Adamson Larson BS’47 is retired from teaching piano inthe U’s music department, where she was an
associate professor. She has been a popular lecturer with musical groups such as the Utah Symphony Guild, Utah Opera Guild, and Salt Lake Music Association, and has worked for the Gina Bachauer piano competition. The Lennox Larson Piano Facility Suite in Gardner Hall was donated by her late husband, Reed P. Larson. The Larsons raised four children.
C. Reuel Ware BS’54,
owner of Reuel’s Photo Blue and Reuel’s Art & Frame, is a member and former president of the Salt Lake Kiwanis Club and has been active in various Salt Lake business organizations, including the Downtown Alliance. He has been a member of Salt Shakers (Chamber of Commerce) for 20 years, and received the Boy’s Club of America Man and Boy award. He and his wife, Dorothy Midgley Ware ex’57, have three children.
Richard G. Taylor ex’53, president of Grant Hatch & Associates insurance brokerage, has held numerous insurance-related positions, including president of the Salt Lake and Utah Associations of Insurance Agents. He has also served on the Utah Safety Council and the Utah Society and the National Society to Prevent Blindness. He and his wife, Marilyn Cottrell Taylor ex’56, have three children. Carol Corbett Macfarlane ex’55 is an officer in IC Group and Financial Registers and president of Macfarlane
Family Corporation. She volunteers at Mountain View Elementary School as a teacher’s aide in remedial read-ing, and served with her husband, James L. Macfarlane BS’54, in the Washington-Seattle LDS Mission. They have four children.

In recognition of their achievements in community and University service C. Ross Anderson BS’61, Robert Forest Bauer ex’43, Clair F. Coleman BS’52 MS’58, Anne Cullimore Decker BS’57 MFA’82, Bettye Berliner Gillespie BA’49 MS’76, LouAnn B. Jorgensen BS’53 MSW’72 PhD’79, and Boyd Pexton BS’48 MS’56 PhD’65 received the 2001 Emeritus Board Merit of Honor award.

Deirdre (DiDi) Darby-Duffin ex’91, who served as student body vice president at the U, is now business director at the Economic Development Corporation of Utah. She also sings with the Golden Voices Gospel Ensemble and the Cavalry Baptist Inspirational Choir. She and her husband, Bob Duffin, have two children.
Jill Danjanovich Briggs BS’95 MprA’96, who was active in many business and accounting organizations while on campus, was named the outstanding accounting scholar for 1996. Briggs volunteers at Neighborhood House and Primary Children’s Medical Center. She is married to Matthew Briggs BS’96.
Neil Ashdown BA’93 MPA’97 is executive director of the Governor’s Council of Economic Advisors, an executive officer of the Wasatch Front Economic Forum, an appointed member of the Governor’s Energy Advisory Council, and chair of the Utah Population Estimates Committee. Ashdown earned his Ph.D. at the State University of New York at Albany. He and his wife, Andrea Zullo Ashdown BS’95 MBA’97, have one son.
Eric Morgan BA’99 is an administrator for Wells Fargo Bank Northwest corporate trust. A U graduate with a double major in Spanish literature and cello performance, Morgan is also a free-lance musician and plays for Ballet West and various recording studios. He and his wife, Emily Neff BS’98, have a daughter, Mary Elizabeth.
Karen Child-Banks BA’97, a member of the Crimson Line while a student at the U, has recently received her master’s degree in marriage and family therapy from San Diego State University. She is married to Tyler Banks.
Kimberly Carlisle O’Leary BS’99 has a background in broadcast journalism and public relations and has worked with KUTV and KTVX television stations. She volunteers with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah and is married to Robert C. O’Leary BS’01.

Social Work.
The Philip and Miriam Perlman Award (faculty): Rosemary Gray, research assistant professor of biology. The Philip and Miriam Perlman Award (staff): Sandra J. McLelland, advisor and coordinator of Scholastic Standards, University College.

Kristin Brewer
The recipient of the 2001 Par Excellence Award—given by the Young Alumni Association to a graduate in recognition of her or his outstanding achievements in community service—is Kristin Brewer BA’86 JD’89. Currently director of the Office of Guardian ad Litem, Brewer was named Young Lawyer of the Year in 1996. She has been instrumental in helping the causes of abused and neglected children in the state of Utah, serving on various committees that deal with children, including the Supreme Court Advisory Committee on Rules of Juvenile Procedure, the Children Protection Team, the Children's Justice Center Advisory Board, and the American Professional Society on Child Abuse, among others. Brewer was honored at the Alumni Association's Spring Awards Banquet April 19, 2001.
