Career assessment instruments can be valuable tools in clarifying your career direction, assisting in your career transition, and capitalizing on your innate preferences. The test is designed to determine the type of work environments that maximize your individual career satisfaction.
Following the assessment, a follow-up appointment to discuss the results and the implications for your career direction is required (see below for details). If you would like to begin this process, please contact the Alumni Career Services (ACS) Program Manager at (801) 585-5036.
Assessments may be completed online at your convenience. You will receive the logon information from the ACS Program Manager. Three excellent instruments (noted below) are currently available, and each offers a full career evaluation. These tests are interpreted by a certified specialist.
Myers-Briggs Type Indicator®
The Myers Briggs® model of personality is a self-report questionnaire designed to make Jung’s theory of psychological types understandable. This test focuses on how a person prefers to behave – not how he or she actually behaves. Understanding preferences, and the “stretch” between preference and actual behavior, can be useful in many ways – from choosing the optimum job or career work environment to managing stress.
Taking the MBTI® and then receiving feedback from trained personnel can help you understand and identify your unique gifts. This test is the most widely used instrument for understanding normal personality differences.
The Myers-Briggs® model of personality is based on four preferences.
- Where do you primarily direct your energy?
- How do you prefer to process information?
- How do you prefer to make decisions?
- How do you prefer to organize your life?
It can help you:
- Choose a new job or career
- Change your job or career
- Increase satisfaction with your present career
The report identifies the individual’s strengths, work styles, preferred work environment, problem-solving styles, and leadership styles. A list of careers per type is also provided.
Strong Interest Inventory®
The Strong Interest Inventory® is another test that is useful in conjunction with Myers-Briggs®. It is a powerful tool that can help you make satisfying decisions about your career and education and is the most respected and widely used career-planning tool available. It has recently been updated, more accurately reflecting the work environment of today. Understanding your Strong profile can help you identify a career focus and assist in the career exploration and career planning process. It consists of:
Thirty Basic Interest Scales, with a new focus on technology, finance and investing, marketing, and entrepreneurship
Six updated General Occupational Themes, identifying Investigative thinkers to Enterprising persuaders
Revised 244 Occupational Scales—over 120 jobs, from Network Administrator to Financial Manager to ESL Instructor
New five-point answer format to more accurately measure individual style preferences in learning, leadership, risk taking, work style, and team orientation
The results allow you to compare interest and skills while generating a list of career fields for consideration.
