Participate in the Process!

The University of Utah needs your voice!

More than 50,000 Utahns are directly involved with the University of Utah: 29,000 students, 3,000 faculty and 15,000 staff, and thousands more alumni and retirees from the U. Too often, legislators do not hear their voices. You can help change that.

Your investment of a little time and effort can have a big impact on the legislative process. Get to know your legislators—and let them get to know you. It’s the perfect time to get involved.

You can make a difference by contacting your representative and senator. Here are three simple steps to follow:  1. Find       2. Contact     3. Do

Find your legislators

To find out which legislative district you are in, go to http://le.utah.gov/maps/amap.html.  Information is also available at the Utah Legislature Web site: www.le.utah.gov.

Contact your legislators

  • Learn the issues. Be prepared, informed, and factual. You are not expected to be an expert, but do be aware of the key points of the issue and understand how the U could be affected.
  • Keep it simple. Courtesy is important. If you call, keep the call short—5 to 10 minutes. If you e-mail, be concise and to the point.
  • Be brief. On the phone, listen more than you talk; it’s more effective.
  • Be specific. Identify your subject and clearly state your position.
  • Be reasonable; don’t ask for the impossible or engage in threats.
  • Ask them to state their positions on the issue. You are entitled to know.
  • Thank them for their hard work!

Remember!…

Building a relationship with your legislator will make it easier for you to remind her/him to support the University of Utah and higher education. In a time of increasing enrollments and shrinking budgets, your involvement has never been more important. It can make a positive difference. You will have the satisfaction of knowing that you are doing what you can to help the University of Utah.
